What is a ribbed t-shirt — how is it different from a regular cotton tee?
A ribbed tee is knitted with alternating raised and recessed columns (ribs) rather than a flat, uniform surface. The result is a fabric with a distinctive vertical texture, natural stretch and recovery in multiple directions, and a body-hugging quality that drapes close to curves rather than hanging loose. Unlike flat-knit jersey, ribbed fabric is thicker per layer, non-sheer, and more structured. What is a 2x2 rib texture in fabric?
A 2x2 rib is a knit pattern where two columns of raised stitches (knit) alternate with two columns of recessed stitches (purl), repeating across the width of the fabric. This creates a balanced, symmetrical texture that stretches evenly in all directions and recovers cleanly without distorting the columns. Compared to 1x1 rib (finer, more delicate), 2x2 rib is more substantial and structured — it holds its shape better, feels heavier against the skin, and creates a more pronounced visual texture. Are ribbed tees see-through?
Quality ribbed tees at heavier weights (240 gm²+) are not see-through. The raised column structure of rib knit creates a denser fabric than flat jersey at the same weight — the overlapping texture adds opacity even in lighter colors. At 260 gm², Mott & Bow's Rib Scoop Neck Tee is explicitly designed to be substantial and non see-through: the 2x2 rib construction and heavier weight ensure full coverage in all colors. We made the Rib Scoop Neck Tee because we wanted a tee that earns the word 'classy' without trying. Not another basic — a tee with real presence. We chose a 2x2 rib cotton at 260 gm² because the texture does what flat jersey never can: it loves curves without revealing them, creates a silhouette that reads as intentional from every angle, and holds its structure through a full day of wear. We added a garment butter wash to make something substantial feel impossibly soft. The open scoop neckline frames the décolletage elegantly. Extended sleeves for sophistication.
